The unique features of optical fibers of being geometrically versatile and totally dielectric, together with their capability of guiding light over kilometers with low attenuation, make them ideal tools for implementing sensors.

Any of the optical characteristics of the guided light can be modulated by a measurand. In all sensors presented in this webpage the intensity modulation of the guided beam is exploited for sensing. The optical fibers are used as light guides only, for direct spectroscopy or nephelometry measurements, or are coupled to a transducer whose interaction with the measurand induces the intensity modulation.
